Earthquake Rocks Masbate

MASBATE CITY - A woman died of heart attack, five others suffered from fractures and wounds and scores of buildings and roads were damaged after two earthquakes rocked Masbate province in the afternoon and evening of Saturday, February 15.

Seismic equipment of the Masbate Phivolcs office recorded earthquakes of tectonic origin, at 1:47 p.m. and another at 7:01 of 5.2 and 6.1 magnitudes respectively. The epicenter of the earthquakes was located at coordinates 12.0 degrees North, 123.8 degrees East and was estimated at 44 kilometers southeast of this City. With a depth of 3 kilometers, the Phivolcs said the source of the tremor could have been the Masbate segment of the Philippine Fault Zone. The Phivolcs seismograph recorded about 60 aftershocks.
